Why are you traveling? First, I’ve learned that life moves more slowly and with so much more meaning when I decorate it with contrast, adventure and challenge. Second, apart from the tantrums I occasionally throw, I love change. Third, I have an inherent interest in how the world is coming together. Fourth, when I travel, I find an edge. . . . I evolve without even trying, I let go of the pesky details in exchange for BPMs (big picture messages), life comes together without a plan. Ummm. . .fifth, I get a bizarre high from socializing with strangers. Sixth (why I am counting?), I just feel so much more alive out here on the road than at Pottery Barn shopping for placemats–I’m hoping to suckerpunch my tendency to accumulate stuff. Finally, my husband and I are just into the blue pill—we left the US two years ago for the Peace Corps, have just begun our Wanderlust or Bust Tour through the Middle East and hopefully Africa, and we’ve discovered that despite the lack of quality salsa this side of France, transcontinental living is a truckin’ good time. Now just how to fit in children. . .
What was your occupation before becoming travel junkie? Dotcommer/Marketing Consultant/Writer/Planned Parenthood Devotee/Peace Corps Volunteer
Where was your first trip to? Wiesbaden, Germany, Age 12
Why did you choose where you are traveling to now? Because it’s the most unknown.
What is the most essential thing in your bag? Black yoga pants
What is the most unpractical thing you brought with you? Hair Dryer (I know, I know)
What is the weight of bag, fully packed? I have absolutely no idea. I haven’t seen a scale in a very long time. 25? 35? Whatever you’re thinking, just figure 10 lbs heavier.
When do you write best? Post-yoga, with laptop, Native American style position and with plenty of natural light from a grey day.
Why do you blog? Because writing about everything makes it true to me. . . .I want a record of my life. . .I want to create. . .I want to connect. Blogging has helped me figure out who I am and what I’m capable of (and not capable of). It’s priceless.
What are you reading right now? Just finished Gone With the Wind, starting A Short History of Nearly Everything and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. But I’m so not in to either one. Long Quiet Highway is my bible.
What is your mantra during a travel crisis? The universe always says yes. Really, everything will be okay.
What is the one thing you miss most from home? Besides friends and family, smiles and lines. I just lived for two years in Bulgaria - i’s not a terribly happy place.
