Be a White Baboon

So, are you a writer? Are you traveling for more than 3 months? Do you want to write about your experiences? More than that, do you need to write about them? Do you get up at 3am in the morning, wired on jetlag, just to write down a little vignette about what happened to you on the plane ride there? Do you painstakingly then post this nugget to your personal blog over some excruciatingly slow internet cafe connection only to wonder, will anyone besides my mom ever read this?Well, then maybe you want to join the White Baboon crew. We are not a “YouTube” of travel literature. We present a voice of really good travel writing. So, we only have a couple of writers at any given times, ones that we feel like will be able to tell you a really good story. We want to promote good writing. If you join us, we will work hard to market your work. You get to focus on the fun part, the traveling, experiencing, and writing. Let me tell you the deal:

  1. You must be a good writer. This is the first and biggest criteria.
  2. You must be traveling somewhere. Where, is not really important. A fabulous writer telling tales from the heart about driving around Idaho is more interesting than a mediocre writer living with a tribe in outer Mongolia (“they serve yak milk here. What’s up with that?”). You don’t need to be staying in a different hotel or youth hostel every night to qualify as traveling. Spending six months living in an igloo with an indigenous tribe somewhere in Alaska or spending three months tracking dolphins in the Amazon basin or a year making wines in the south of France qualify as traveling.
  3. You agree to write about one blog entry per week. We’re not hard and fast on this rule as we realize that some weeks enough happens to make fifteen blog entries and other weeks pass without a story. That is fine – we are talking averages here.
  4. You email the entries to us. We respect your creative genius in putting this blog together and we will keep some editorial control over the site. We are not evil warlords, but reasonable people who might return a story to you with some helpful hints on how to improve it. We are going for great travel literature here. We will not publish anything unless you give us the green light.
  5. We post your blog on the site. We can even including pictures if you want to send them to us as well.
  6. We find distribution for the blog and drive traffic to it. We’re talking the elusive eyeballs here. We’re talking what every writer craves: an audience. But remember, this is a start-up. We are not a well established magazine with hundreds of thousands of readers. We will do what we can. We will put elbow grease into this and call all our favors to get this thing distributed. We hope it will be fabulously successful. But, my mother may be the only reader visiting the site on a regular basis for a while. You have been warned.

Still interested? Want to join us on our journey as we try to make this thing fly? Send a writing sample to apply@whitebaboon.com. Please send no more than three pieces of no more than 1000 words. You do not have to send three pieces. If you only have two that are fabulous, just send those two. If you only have one…well, try writing a second one, will ya?Good luck. And safe travels.
